Heidelberg

True experience of beauty and pleasure

Have you ever heard about Heidelberg? It is considered to be one of the most beautiful German towns. It cannot be called a city but it’s very special and worth a visit.

I took a regional train from Frankfurt to Heidelberg because I combined these two short trips. I was surprised that the landscape became more and more beautiful, with hills everywhere, small villages and churches. It reminded me a bit of my home country, Hungary, and one could feel that we are heading to the South. It was so different from Northern Germany! And that feeling continued as I arrived in warm, sunny weather to this beautiful town.

Heidelberg is a historical German town that is famous for its university and the castle on the top of a hill. As the whole old town and the river side are beautiful, it seemed to be full of tourists from all around the world: from America to Asia. Due to this fact, you must count with higher prices in the restaurants and cafés, but also the accommodation is quite pricy in Heidelberg. Good news is that one or two days are totally enough for this town. You can walk around the center, go up to the castle, eat some tasty food, maybe do some shopping in the famous main street, and just enjoy the special atmosphere which was a bit Mediterranean to me. Maybe it was due to the weather, maybe because almost all the cafés, ice-cream places and restaurants were opened at 10 p.m. With all the lights of the downtown area, including the famous bridge and the castle, Heidelberg was even more beautiful in the evening than during the day. I couldn’t do anything but just enjoy it.

A trip from me, if you’re considering visiting this beautiful German town: take your time around the castle. It has some gardens, so you can walk around, sit down for a while, but first of all, just enjoy the spectacular view to the town. I didn’t go into the castle, but it’s also possible to go for a tour inside.

I had actually thought before this journey that Heidelberg will remind me of that Bavarian town where I spent an Erasmus semester at the university. Bamberg and Heidelberg are indeed very similar, and both of them worth a visit – but a short one is enough. It was very nice to be a tourist in such a beautiful place. 😊
